Preston Bailey is an incredible event designer, but he also has an inspiring journey of how he got there. His blog is a fascinating read, and today's post held these 10 reminders he keeps with him each day...I think I'll be doing the same:

Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems and obstacles are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class, but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
Don’t compare your business to others, you have no idea what their journey is all about.
Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.
Don’t take yourself too seriously. No one else does.
What other people think of you is none of your business.
However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

Yes, we sure do! A few months ago, I was asked to design a logo and blog header for a fun project called, "Everyone Loves Pie." This blog was the genius idea of a good friend of mine, Sara Gray (the brilliant wedding photographer). She even hosted a lovely Pie Party, so I can tell you from experience, she knows her pies, and her recipes are absolutely delicious! sa wat dee ka!

My brother, Jon has been in the northern region of Thailand installing a water system for a village there. He has been there for the last 2 weeks, and we just got word from him today via his blog sa wat dee ka! I have no clue what the translation is. He'll be traveling all around Thailand and surrounding countries "alone" for the next month or so...I'm sure he'll be meeting and traveling with all kinds of people he meets along the way. I'm so eager to hear his stories! He just graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree from OSU, and within days of finishing up classes, he set off for helping the people of Thailand. I'm so excited to see where his journey and talent will lead! Anyway, all of this to say, that if you want to follow his adventures in Thailand, check out his blog. I've posted one of my favorite pictures of him below (he's not going to appreciate this)...taken on our family trip this past December to Cabo.

Working hard for the money!

For some of us, we don't earn our bread and butter by pursing our passions 40+ hours a week. I know I could probably fill a novel with how much I've complained about this in my own life. When you're in the trenches, it's hard to see the horizon. It's hard to see what you're working for. But chin up my friends, keep working hard! Working long hours at a difficult job you don't like, solving impossible and frustrating problems, blazing a solution when there is resistance, dealing with difficult people (for some, that is putting it nicely)...these things build a confidence that you can do anything. I'd argue, a confidence you might not have otherwise. It doesn't matter where you build this confidence, or what your position is. But once you have it, when that perfect opportunity comes around, you'll be ready to jump. Just be sure to keep an eye on the horizon...even if you have to stand on your tippy-toes to see from the trench. Oh, and one more thing...don't forget to be grateful for your time in the trenches. That is where you will grow your wings. But if you're not looking at the horizon, you'll never need them.

What comes easily to you, and is hard for other people?

Think about it for a moment... I stumbled upon this question from Farrah Gary, in an old magazine tear out. Are you stumped? Let that question sit for a moment... What comes easily to you, and is hard for other people? It can be absolutely anything. Do you have a funny knack for frosting the perfect cookie, building a project timeline, or coming up with creative ways to organize things? Is there something that you find yourself gravitating toward, something you look forward to doing, or a task that invigorates you? Don't filter what comes to mind. Write a list (this is hard, I know). Even if you only have one item, allow yourself to think about it, mull over it, pick it apart. You'll not only learn more about yourself, but you may also discover an opportunity to pursue a passion you didn't realize was there.

When I learned of Enjoy Cupcakes via Style Me Pretty's post, that was my first thought! They're a sweet little business on wheels, offering cupcakes to those who pass by their trailer. Gold Leaf Rocks

What better way to fight to post-holiday blues than by getting crafty? I stumbled upon this "Gold Leaf Rocks" project months ago on Design*Sponge, and in my blogging hiatus, never shared this wonderful idea until now! It's pretty easy, all the supplies you'll need can be found at most craft stores (and in your own backyard), and you get instant results (for those of you who are especially into that). This project makes for great treasures to give as gifts, place cards for an event, or even just an artful addition to your home of office! It's funny, you'll never look at a rock the same again!

A little bit of Gratitude

I struggle with stress. There, I've said it! Admitting the struggle was my first step, and was soon followed by me blaming all of the circumstances in my life that caused me to be stressed. Ironic how once you're stressed out, everything else finds a way to be stressful...even taking lunch breaks! Oh yes, the vicious cycle in which I have become a "frequent flier." Once I'd saved up enough frequent flier miles, I found I nearly had a free one-way ticket to not-so-Pleasant-ville. It was a scary realization, but I'm grateful to have made the discovery when I did. You see, my stress was not a result of my circumstances, but instead, my response to my circumstances, a mere symptom...not a sentence. I was choosing stress.

A week or so ago, my husband came home and told me that those who write down 3-5 things they're grateful for each night before going to bed, are less stressed. Woah! So, I've started a "Gratefulness Journal." So, for those of you who struggle with stress (or fear or worry...close cousins of stress), or even the absence of joy, I encourage you to take this simple step to write down the things you're grateful for every day (and don't do what I did and wait to start until you find a really cute journal...start now and write on a gum wrapper if you have to). Especially on the hardest days when we feel like there might be nothing to write down. Gratitude is not necessarily about those things that happen to us, but about our response to life.

I say this as if I've had some sort of victory. I haven't, and those who know me best are well aware of that. But I'm reaching, and stretching, and seeking...I'm determined to crush stress out of my life so that I may fully experience the joy that is under all these layers I've created. Yes, this is war!

I've just listened to Earl Nightingale's, "The Strangest Secret," and was inspired to tears. Literally. I highly recommend everyone set aside the 31 minutes and 35 seconds of your life to soak up Mr. Nightingale's insights that will truly shape what you become...especially for those of you who have dreams bigger than your current circumstances.

Most of you know about my obsession with Martha Stewart's work. Truth be told, I actually do know she doesn't come up with all of these wonderful ideas all by herself, but has an incredible team of people behind her who do. Can you imagine the brainstorming sessions that must go on in that place? I get all hot and bothered just thinking about it!

I just learned about Rebecca Thuss, previously a Style Director for both Martha Stewart Weddings and Blueprint (RIP). She has since joined her husband, Patrick Farrell, in their multidisciplinary photography and graphic design firm, ThussFarrell. I have inspiration journals full of her work, and so it was so exciting for me to put a name to the inspiration. So, I thought I'd leave some eye candy for you today of her work that has inspired me in the past.

Lucky me! So, I was going about my business today, and opened up a daily email I get from Daily Candy. That is where I learned about Ecofont, a brand spankin' new typeface designed by Spranq that is actually kind to the environment! What? Yep, it's true! Each letter actually uses 20% less ink, which means fewer ink cartridges end up in the trash. Download Ecofont for yourself here...lucky you!

To start off the New Year, I wanted to share a great printable calendar I discovered a few years ago in the now out of print Blueprint Magazine (tear!). All it takes is card stock, careful cutting, and some tacky glue (don't make the same mistake I did by using super-glue...you'll glue your fingers together, which is quite frightening). She has posted a tutorial on how to make vanilla, and has included sources, and links to labels (just print, cut, peel, and stick). I'm not sure if you've strolled the holiday decor aisles, but they are unusually full this year. It's true, holiday decor is a pure luxury, and these days, one would think luxuries were going out of style. So if you have found yourself scaling back this season, I have good news for you! No need to spend a fortune on a holiday wreath (or go without) when you can make a lovely one! You can find instructions for the cookie wreath pictured above here (scroll down a bit) at Fancy Flours. Now you don't have to rush out and get fancy cookie cutters or decorations...I challenge you to use what you have. A cookie wreath would be equally adorable made from round cookie cutters, even a hodge-podge of different ones. Happy decorating!

I absolutely love runway. It all started when I was a little girl, and my mom took me to a runway show. I have been captivated ever since. Victoria's Secret is known for having arguably the most incredible runway shows of all, so you can bet I tuned into CBS tonight to soak up the all creativity and be inspired. If you've missed it, there is a beautiful clip on their site here. The wings, the pink and black, the feathers, the sparkles, the fluff, the glamor... But I'm left with one question, how do they get nothing but their boobs to jiggle?

Oh, I wish I could remember where I learned about this book! Anyway, it's worth sharing and posting, so lets not let my memory get in the way.

Katie Kirk has added the most precious book to her Flickr photostream, called Eli, No! It's an adorable story about a dog, Eli, who just can't seem to stay out of trouble. Many who have had puppies will quickly relate! More than the story, I love her illustrations. Click through and enjoy...hopefully one of these days we can buy a published copy! What a great gift for kiddos!

While browsing the archives at Design Sponge, I found this sweet chandelier painted directly on the wall. Couldn't tell at first, could ya? No need for an electrician or a spendy light fixture...just a can of paint and a steady hand (or if you don't have one, bribe a friend who does)! This has got my wheels churning for sure! You could paint a fireplace, light fixtures flanking a couch or buffet, or even paint an ornate frame behind a simple picture or mirror. Or what about that narrow space that really needs a little something, but isn't big enough? Paint on a nice table with a lamp silhouette, and maybe with a nice chair to the side. Impressive, huh? Impress Rubber Stamps has a great archive of crafty holiday ideas, and mini tutorials. You actually might be surprised by what you can make out of things you already have at home...wrapping paper, ribbon, old cards, even buttons...no sense in spending a bazillion dollars buying everything when you can get crafty with what you already have! Aren't these Christmas Tree cupcakes below adorable in their drifts of snow?

This will be a financially tight holiday season for many of us. All this means is that we'll have to get more creative when it comes to decorating, event hosting, and gift giving. I hope to dig up inspiration on all these things to share with you during this holiday season.

The first discovery has been Amy Butler's downloadable patterns. My favorite is her Snow Mum Pillow, pictured. This has totally got my creative juices flowing! She used a nice wool, but you can use just about anything you like. I'd even challenge you to dig through fabric scraps, or even old clothes and sweaters to find a special material for this project. Maybe there is an old tattered baby blankie that needs to go...why not convert it? Old prom dresses, a favorite shirt with a stubborn stain, a child's outgrown dress,. old school uniforms...see where I'm goin'? I have been considering using the wide ribbon saved from my wedding to create the flower. Any other suggestions on things you'd like to convert?

Birthday Weekend: Some DIY Inspiration, Part 2

Wow! Isn't this "Drift Wood Sculpture" (as I call it) a great fence for the beach? Now, maybe I'm a bit crazy for considering this a DIY project, but I'm optimistic...and like with the previous post, without actual instructions. Hopefully I haven't lost you already... It looks like all you'd need to create this would be 1) driftwood, 2) concrete for setting, 3) a base to set your sculpture and pour the concrete in 4) any shells or stones you'd like to include (see picture below), and 5) about 20 people who would graciously hold the driftwood in place for 2 days until the concrete dries (or you could probably make some sort of grid).

Well, this pretty much concludes our beach weekend...now it's time to start posting about the upcoming holiday season!

Birthday Weekend: Some DIY Inspiration, Part 1

I'm kicking myself for not taking a better picture, but what the heck. I love the river rock floor on the shower, and thought it'd be a fun project for home! I have even read about the reflexology benefits of this somewhere before. After combing through a couple forums for tips and advice, I have concluded that this isn't a simple project. Sigh. If you're still up to the challenge (yes, I think I am), there is a forum with good content here. If I find a nice tutorial I'll certainly update this post with a nice link.

Birthday Weekend: The Finds

The cottage was stocked with all kinds of great finds! I made a point of using all the utensils in the kitchen, taking note of every detail, and looking closely at each feature so that I could relay all the goodness onto you. So, without further adu, here it is...

I loved the tea kettle from OXO! It was an unexpected splash of pastel in the kitchen, and the whistle was a nice hummm as opposed to the blood-curdling shriek mine currently makes (and how does one know before buying a tea kettle what sound it will make?). Honey, you can add this to my Christmas wish list (find it here)!

These are great looking plates! The rim was reminiscent enough of a shell that it worked so smartly for the beach, but I could see this in an urban kitchen also, can't you? Get your own here.

Now, I know stemless wine glasses are for, well, drinking wine, but I found myself pouring juice and water in these things all weekend! They were nice and over sized, and didn't feel like they were going to break in my hand. Get your own, here.

I am the pickiest person when it comes to my pillow! In fact, I have been known to bring my pillow with me to foreign countries to ward off any possibilities of a stiff neck. You'd think I would have brought my pillow with me this weekend, but I forgot it...and ended up not regretting that a bit! Yep, after an great night sleep, I was pulling off the pillowcase in hopes the pillow had a tag to offer me any leads on where to get my own. It came from Pacific Coast Feather Co (along with the great comforter), and you can also buy your own here. The pillow case, sheets, and duvet cover were also amazing. They had a crepe-y feel to them, and made from bamboo. You can also get your own from DreamSacks, Inc.

Annual November Birthday Beach Weekend

Quite a mouthful! Every year, my family gathers at the Oregon Coast to celebrate our November birthdays...3 birthdays to be exact, 4 including the dog. Jon's birthday (my brother) is on the 1st, mine is on the 11th, Ruthie's is on the 18th (doggie), and my dad's is on the 28th...our ages to remain undisclosed for Ruthie's sake. With all of us living in different places, it's just easier and more festive to come and celebrate together!

A Pumpkin Treat

Just a few weeks ago, I discovered an old magazine tear out for this recipe. Craving just about anything pumpkin, I decided to make them...and have ended up making them twice in a week! So yes, they're good...very good! From the picture, I thought they'd be more like a cookie, but really they're like little cookie shaped cakes. Anyway, you'll just have to try them and decide for yourself. Here is the recipe for Pumpkin Pies from Family Fun Magazine.

Instead of sandwiching the cookies between icing, I set each individual cookie on a bed of white chocolate. It gave a nice crunch against the cake. I tried also drizzling white chocolate over the tops, but ended up making a disaster out of the kitchen...sometimes we just have to be practical, people!

Monogram your Pumpkin

I love anything monogram, and pumpkins are no exception. Find your favorite type, blow it up, print it out, and use as a stencil to carve your pumpkin. To achieve the translucent look, use a linoleum cutter (yes, just like the one found in high school art class). You can find the instructions from none other than Martha, here.

For those of you with Fall weddings, it'd be really sweet to have monogrammed pumpkins as either table decor, lining the aisle, or greeting guests at the guestbook table or entrance. You can work with your designer to bring in elements (or monograms) from your invites onto the pumpkins.

What the Bedazzle are you doing to my Pumpkin?

Martha unveiled the brilliant idea of glittering pumpkins last Fall. There are many reasons why I love this idea so much! First of all, they're so pretty, they don't have to be condemmed to the front portch (actually might even play a starring role on your tabletop). Second, you don't have to carve them (but I will warn you, the glitter does tend to get messy). And last, they'll likely last you through Thanksgiving...who said your pumpkins are only for Halloween? Some aesthetic considerations to help your glittery pumpkins turn out the best: 1) use a glitter that isn't clear (Martha's crew uses glitter from Art Glitter ), 2) find pumpkins or other gourds that have good shape and character, and 3) use a variety of glitter colors. I know Martha glitters the stem, but I personally like the contrast of the glittered pumpkin with the un-glittered stem. But, thats just me. You can watch the tutorial, here.

Dress up your Cupcake

Fall gets me in the mood to bake! I literally woke up this morning thinking of different ways to decorate a pumpkin shaped sugar cookies. What can I say, I love that kind of stuff! Speaking of, aren't these cute cupcake wrappers? The invention of such a thing is entirely new to me, but what a fun way to fancy up your Halloween treats! You can find them here from Fancy Flours.

Log Bowls

These Log Bowls are like nothing I have ever seen before! The temptation would be to put something in them (actually nuts would be a bit hilarious…I’d feel like a squirrel), because, well, they’re bowls! But they are so precious just the way they are with that high-gloss finish, that I wouldn’t dare! I just love that colorful, glossy contrast against the bark. I discovered them on Design Mom’s blog when she did a post about another post she did on Cookie Magazine’s Nesting Blog, here. They are handmade by Loyal Loot Collective and local crafters, and are created out of reclaimed trees. How special is that!

Pushing Daisies

Oh, I love this show! I mostly love the way it looks. Yes, I am one of those people who can love a bad movie only because it may have pretty costumes and imagery. Alright, so I've already gone off track! Not only is Pushing Daisies a pretty show, but the plots are whimsical, and each episode seems like a mini-movie with it's own theme, plot, and conclusion. Of course you have the common threads running through each episode...Chuck and the Pie Maker's love affair in which they can never touch. With the help of a trusty DVR, I never miss an episode (Wednesdays at 8/7 central, on ABC)! ABC has also been generous enough to post past episodes online (even Season 1), so if you want to catch up, here is your chance! By the way, I'm not sure if anyone else noticed, but I loved the mugs they used at the Pie Hole. They're white with sweet little green stripes. I'll let you know if I ever find out where to get them!

Spun Sugar Caramel Apples

Leave it to Martha and her crew to come up with these gorgeous Spun Sugar Caramel Apples. The web-effect is so creative in all of it's "spooky elegance," but I think sans the spiders, this could be a fancy treat served even post-Fall. To be honest, I have never attempted this sweet treat because it does require sacrificing a whisk to wire-cutters, but I think it will be worth it once I get the guts to try (but will be sure to include a warning with this post if it just turns into a sticky mess). Let me know if you have any luck!

Chocolate Raspberry Martini

I'm not a huge drinker, but when something spirited can double as dessert, I'm totally game! Leave it to HWTM to hook up something sweet in her Drink of the Week, a Chocolate Raspberry Martini. Bottoms up!

Chocolate Raspberry Martini
{Makes 4 to 6 dessert drinks}

Ingredients:
12 Fresh raspberries
2 ounces Chambord
4 Tablespoons Semi-Sweet Cocoa powder
8 ounces of Merlot or Cabernet

Method:
In a bowl add raspberries and ½ ounce of the Chambord. Muddle these together to ensure the two are well incorporated. Add the cocoa powder and 4 ounces of the red wine. Mix well and then strain into a small pitcher to remove the raspberry seeds. Add the additional Chambord and red wine. Pour into a mixing glass or shaker with ice and vigourously shake. Strain into martini glasses and enjoy!

As an option, rim your martini glasses with chocolate and crushed nuts. You can also dust with a little cocoa powder or add a shaving of chocolate.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, than this gorgeous "interior typography" must be, well, you know what I mean! Wonderful Graffiti creates custom and pre-created wall art that you can apply to whatever hard surface you like. I especially love the chalkboard pieces! So often we look for the right picture or mirror for a space, when all we need is a good (aesthetically appealing) quote. Who said only pictures can be sentimental? I know I'm mulling over some possibilities I'd love to put up someday! If there happen to be any husbands reading, you'd be smart to surprise your wife with a quote in your own handwriting on the bathroom mirror, "honey (or insert endearing name here), you look beautiful." She'll melt all over again each time she reads it!

I could spend a humble fortune good storage. The thought of having things categorized, organized, and looking seamless makes me giddy (a bit OCD, I know). On that note, I've been frusterated lately with the pantry. Bags of pasta, nuts, dried fruits toppled on top of each other everywhere...there seems to be no easy way to neatly organize these things! So, I did some hunting at Ikea, and have found a solution! The DROPPAR storage jars are wonderful! They are clear, glass jars with a frosted band around them, and a stainless steel rimmed top with a see-through window. I love the clean look, and all the different sizes they come in (14 - 118 oz, plus spice jars). For the truly daring, they'll even look good on your open kitchen shelving. Magical!

Even though my days as a student are behind me (for now, anyway), the desire for those fresh, new Fall clothes seems to come by surprise each year. I thumbed through the latest J.Crew catalog, wanting just about everything, but knowing with the hubby in school, I'll just have to hold tight a bit longer (he'll be finished this Spring!). I just opened the windows to hear the rain, poured a cup of chai tea, cozied up to a good magazine, and popped in Pride & Prejudice. Is it time for a cozy pre-Fall posting or what?

I was introduced to the Tomato Orange Soup at Elephants Delicatessen quite a few years ago. I became addicted, and have since stumbled upon the recipe...yes, THE recipe (here you are). I've been known to make it many times, keep a stash frozen in the freezer, even take it to work many days in a row, and pass it along to friends and family (who then also joined in the addiction). Pair this with a grilled cheese sandwich for dipping, and you'll be in comfort food heaven!

You can serve it dressed up for a holiday starter by garnishing it with grilled-cheese-croutons (cut a grilled cheese sandwich into cubes, and sprinkle 2 or 3 on top of the soup just prior to serving), or pour some into your most faithful storage container for some yummy leftovers. Eat up!

Come Away With Me...

Nights like this inspire me. It's late, and we've spent the last couple days soaking up memories with out of town friends. The guys are still in the living room (yes, playing super-hero video games), Jenny is asleep in the love seat, and the dogs are all conked out from 2 days of non-stop play. I've secretly retreated to my little home-office, shut the doors, and turned on Norah Jones "Come Away with Me." I'm not sure what it is about that album...maybe it's because I started listening to it with my sweet roomates at Oregon State during such a fun and incredible season of my life. Maybe because I'd find it on my playlist during late nights trying to get design projects wrapped up before the next morning's deadline. Maybe because it was the last song we danced to at our wedding. It's amazing how a song can bring back a rush of old memories...as if they were all happening once again during this very moment. I just need this minute to soak it all up once again. Come away with me...

You wanna carrot?

Yes, this is my sweet sweet dog, Ruthie. She came to us as a "middle-aged" retired guide dog, which means she's already trained and we can't take even an ounce of credit for how wonderful she is. Gushing aside, this girl loooooves carrots! Just the word "carrot" will get her all excited. Since she is a bit on the older side, her vet told us that if she loves carrots so much, to replace them with treats. They won't cause her to gain weight, so she can have as many as she wants. So, we spoil her rotten, and she eats so many carrots that they almost literally come back out the other end (apologies if thats too much info).

So, if your dog needs to go on a diet, or like us, you just want to do all you can to spoil your furry one, then try carrots!

Rub-a-dub-dub

I was talking to a co-worker yesterday about how cute little ones are with those hooded bath towels. Especially the ones that are animals and characters. In light of that conversation (which I assure you had something important to do with work...okay, you got me, probably had nothing to do with work), I had to go investigate and see who really had cute hooded bath towels for kiddos. Spiffy Baby has an adorable assortment of different animals, Dwell Baby has some great graphic prints, and Pottery Barn Kids has really sweet animal hoodies (yes, they have a puppy AND a froggy), and organics for the admirable.

I'm headed off on a tangent here, so if you want to stick around, be my guest. Here it goes: quite honestly, I have the hardest time getting baby gifts for people. First of all, I haven't experienced the joy of motherhood yet, so I have no idea what people actually need and want (yea yea, I know most do registries these days, but I like gifts to be a surprise, so I try to avoid registries altogether). Second of all, I avoid buying clothes if at all possible (sometimes they're just too cute to resist) because I swear American babies are the best clothed people on the planet (or maybe I'm ignorant), and I'm not always so sure my taste will be the same as baby's parents. But even harder than the baby gift is the first birthday gift! So now days, I've made it easy on myself, and defaulted to getting a sweet hooded towel and bubble bath (apologies to the first birthday parties coming up) because they are so stinkin' adorable! Note to parents: please take pictures...I know bath time is probably the hardest time to grab the not-so-water-resistant camera...especially with a naked toddler running around the house, but you've just got to capture the moment. If anything, you can use it for blackmail when they're teenagers!

Many of you already know that I love just about anything Martha Stewart. I also love anything entrepreneurial. About a year ago, I discovered Ladies Who Launch, an incredible network of women entrepreneurs. It's a support community that helps women launch and grow their own businesses...it's amazing what one can accomplish when we all join together. I got involved, joining an incubator, and attending the Live event in Portland last fall. Amazing women, amazing experience!

So, I just got an email this morning from my Ladies Who Launch incubator leader informing me that Martha Stewart and Ladies Who Launch have joined together to create "Dreamers into Doers"(jaw drop). Yes, this is yet another network of bringing women dreamers together, with Martha as our mentor!

The BEST Strawberry Ice Cream!

You know, today was just one of those Mondays! I somehow put in a 12+ hour day, and managed to throw together a pretty delicious dinner (yep, pat on the back for that one). I no sooner sat down a few moments ago to tune into the Olympics, and the craving for ice cream overwhelmed me. And not just any ice cream, I want a whole pint of Haagen Dazs Strawberry ice cream (arguably the best strawberry ice cream out there!). But seeing that it is nearly 11:00pm, the stores will be closed and time for me to get some sleep before tomorrow begins (is it Friday yet?).

Going for the GOLD!

...but the silver and bronze are quite nice also. These metals were beautifully designed with a different color jade inlay for each metal. The gold metal flanks white jade, the silver metal matched with the green jade, and the bronze metal with the dark green jade. I love it when design does more than just look good, but that also transcends a bigger story...one that is visually communicated in a way that everyone will instantly understand. These metals are a priceless token of momentous event...can I please have one of each?

The Opening Ceremonies were last night in Beijing for the Summer 2008 Olympics, and they were incredible! I actually didn't catch the whole thing, and I think I missed some of the best parts. So, I've been trying to track down a way to watch it online, and will share it with all of you once I find it. NBC has posted the firework show , which was mind-blowing as you can imagine. As each of the countries walked through the stadium with their flags and onto the Olympic Stage, they crossed over these stamp pads, and then onto a white pad, which left this incredible rainbow of everyone's footprint. Truly, I'm having trouble coming up with the right words...as we watched Yao Ming holding young hero Lin Hao (an inspiring story in itself) as they gathered with all the countries of the world, I told my husband, "This must be what world peace feels like."

Aren't these the most beautiful pencils you have ever seen? I assure you, no one will miss the little eraser on the end. Truthfully, I'd probably never use them and opt keep them wrapped nicely in their little boxes, and take them out on special occasion to look at them (only to carefully tuck them away once again) as if a fine piece of jewelry. I love calendars! Probably because I love planning just about anything and everything. I know, I'm a huge nerd. Back when Blueprint Magazine was running, they created a 2008 printable calendar for their December 2007 issue. I especially love that they used Fling as the type, and that these can fit nicely into a CD jewel case. Genius! They have graciously posted it to Martha's website here for us all to enjoy. I know, I know, we're more than half way through 2008, but if I would have been blogging last December, I assure you, you would have had it then!

Lobster Bake (fun for West Coasters too)!

I have always wanted to go to a lobster bake! I grew up on the West Coast, but s'mores seem to be about the only thing we cook on the beach. So, the thought of getting a bunch of friends and family together for some good seafood and lots-o-butter on the beach sounds pretty wonderful.

Michael Chiarello from the Food Network has given us a great recipe for cooking the clams and lobsters. A great seafood bisque can be found here from Ida Garten. For the ultimate seafood free for all, serve by covering tables with decorative fishnets, and piling the lobster and clams on top with lemon halves and corn on the cob strewn about. Be sure to provide bowls (or how about cute galvanized buckets) for guests to discard the shells.

Make it a spontaneous event, or add a formal flair. It'd make for an memorable feast after an small (or large) beach wedding. I can already envision the great lobster theme letter pressed invites and the bride and groom posing for pictures with lobster bibs on!

It seems like families are growing everywhere these days! This post is for all of you out there with impending additions, and the memories you'll want to savor forever of your new little bundles.

Good Stock Press & Bindery does the most beautiful heirloom book albums. I could post their whole site, but will direct you there yourself so they can tell their own story. My favorite album they have done (that you might also consider for your little one) is the "Picture a day/First birthday." Designer mom, and photographer dad took pictures each day for the first year of baby Seneca's life. Then, they inserted their wishes for her throughout the pages. You can also find a lovely posting about this album on Design Mom's Blog. Precious!

On Martha's show today, she also had a few great photo ideas for baby (you can watch this piece of the show at this link on her site). My personal favorite is each year on their birthday, having your child hold a picture of the age they are turning. Martha recommends, if possible, to take the picture in the same place each year. How fun to watch them grow up!

The Last Lecture

It's one thing when something inspires you, but it's a whole different thing when someone inspires you. Randy Pausch, famous for his YouTube appearance in his talk, "The Last Lecture," has become an inspiration to millions and millions of you out there by inspiring us to live our lives with a whole new perspective...in a whole new way.

But the twist that makes his story all the more inspirational was his diagnosis and battle with pancreatic cancer. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, he used his illness to fuel his life...even right up until the end. He died July 25th, but I don't get the impression he's "lost" the battle, but rather, taken the next step in his journey.

There is just no way to adequately describe Randy's character and magnetic ability to inspire. So turn off "Judge Judy" or "Entertainment Tonight," and trade you time for something that will fill you to overflowing. Our hearts and gratitude go out to his wife, Jai, and 3 young kids, Logan, Dylan, and Chloe. I think they'd all agree that despite today's grief, there is still more to come. Yes, Jai, his magic remains.

My parents and sis recently returned from a long and lavish Euro Adventure through Greece, Italy, and Turkey. I'll be honest, while they were away I was eagerly awaiting what treasure they had gathered to bring home to ME! Yes, so presumptuous, I know. Anyway, they didn't let me down! My mom picked up this Leather Pouf from a leather shop in Turkey. They make these cushion stools out of the left-over scraps cut from the leather jackets. How resourceful is that? In addition, they are sold un-stuffed, which is not only wonderful for folding up and packing home, but they suggested stuffing the poufs with plastic grocery bags, bubble wrap, and the like once returning home. Way to recycle/reduce/reuse! I'm highly considering tracking some of these down before Christmas to stuff all of the left-over gift wrap and packaging in!

I find it interesting that in our day and age of being green and environmentally friendly (which as a native Oregonian, I am a large supporter of), we're often seeking new products that are created in green ways (which again, I support), but often neglect to recognize that it is at the very heart of being green to recycle and reuse that in which we already have. Many don't realize that even the process to break down recyclable materials can be hard on the environment. So what am I saying? Lets use up what we have, lets get creative and find new ways to use what we often throw away or toss into recycle bins, lets minimize our consumption overall (phew, tangent complete).

So how can we get our hands on these lovely poufs? I've found some here. Or, next time your travels take you to Turkey or Morocco, you can likely pick them up for much less (my mom paid 10 Euros). So next time you host a friend's shower, or as the holidays approach, pick one of these up as fun way to avoid putting loads of gift wrap in the landfill. It'll be a fun way to add a sentimental reminder of the celebration, and a lovely accessory to your home.

When it comes to working out, I have had a long dry spell. I've made a million excuses: working long hours, not having a gym membership, and yes, I've even pulled the whole, "I don't have cute gym clothes," excuse. Enough is enough! Last week I made a promise to start taking action towards a healthier lifestyle. As soon as I did that, I discovered a way to take free daily yoga classes home! YogaToday.com offers free yoga classes daily, and I'm thrilled to tell you they're wonderful! I started taking classes yesterday, and loved the ability to yoga-pose-away without an audience (well, other than my dog), or distractions. Best part, I got to wear my PJ's!

I'm devouring the latest "O at Home" issue (Summer 2008), and ran across this quote in a "10 Things I Know for Sure" article featuring architect Michael Graves. The name may not sound familiar to some of you, but I know all you Target-lovers out there will be familiar with his designs when you see them.

As a design-obsessed-Target-lover myself, Michael Graves philosophy has been an inspiration to me in how I fill my home. Specifically, investing in those things I touch and feel everyday. Does ice cream really taste better in a bowl you love holding? I would argue, "yes!" Is is worth going without something until you find the very piece you love? Again, I would argue, "yes," (as I still have yet to purchase adequate matching towels...I just haven't found ones I love enough yet). I know what you're thinking, "Jen, it can get seriously expensive to buy only those things you love." My response, "True, but how much more do you save by buying only what you love in the first place, than constantly replacing what you sorta like over and over." Thankfully for us, Michael Graves has made the "well designed/to cheap ratio" tolerable for even our husbands to bless a splurge.

Glass half full

If any of you have had the pleasure of gushing through the pages of Blueprint Magazine, you'll understand how devastated I was when it was cancelled after only 8 precious issues. They've since created a blog, Bluelines, and it's great, but just not the same as curling up on the couch with the magazine itself. Okay, before I digress too far... In their July/August 2007 issue, they showed the best idea for adding a glow to your tables, and with something many of us already have--wine glasses! These paper shades fit nicely over wine glasses, and combined with a tea light candle, it lets off a nice glow. You can buy these lovely shades here.

Or, you can make them! Download the template from Mirkwood Designs here. Simply trace, cut and glue (ensure they fit the wine glasses you're using).

Brides: your venue or rental company will likely be able to provide extra wine glasses AND tea light candles for little or no money. If you're making your own, you can customize the shades by tracing onto different colors of vellum, using stamps, or for those of you who have customized invites, ask your designer to bring in elements from your invites (such as monograms) onto the shades. The best part? You can use them again post-wedding!

A sweet cure to Spring allergies

If you’re like many of us, you get that little tickle in your nose this time of year, and then the aaachhhew…followed by a mad dash for a tissue, and a bright red nose (lovely). Yep, that’s me! And you know, I don’t have allergies severely enough to take medication everyday, which I’m thankful for. However, this leaves me vulnerable to a sudden and random onset of “episodes.” So, my brother told me that a friend of his told him you can cure pollen-related allergies by incorporating local honey into your diet! I’m sure there is some genius scientific explanation about the local bees pollinating and churning out magical honey. Regardless, my brother tried it, and said it works! I’m not a doctor or pharmacist, but I do love a good natural solution that tastes sweet and supports or local economy.

Some good ways to incorporate honey into your diet: eat it straight up, drizzle on bananas (ooh, and add a dash of cinnamon and spoonful of peanut butter…yum!), pour into tea…

We found local honey at Whole Foods, and I’m sure a number of other natural food stores and farmers markets will also have a fresh and local stash. Enjoy!
